Hold On To Your Hats, It’s Going To Be A Wild Ride

Ok, I said it out loud. Pinterest, the social media darling that has become all the rage these days. The online site that literally lets you pin your favorite items to bulletin boards is growing at an exponential rate.

Corporate leaders of every ilk are out there trying to figure out how to attach their rowboats to the wave and glom on to yet another tsunami of social media users. In other words, how can we make a buck off the latest craze?

Spoiler Alert

But while Pinterest is all the rage, something old is finding a way to be new again. MySpace, often written off for dead, is seeing resurgence. One of social media’s pioneers, MySpace announced this week that in the past month it has seen a growth of 1 million new users.

Experts say much of the credit goes to a new music player, which it launched in December. And it looks like it has reached an Internet détente with rival Facebook. MySpace, which is co-owned by Justin Timberlake, said it is gaining 40,000 new members a day — up from, well, zero.

But enough of this shameless pandering. What I’m trying to say is that when it comes to social media even the smartest aren’t all that smart. Almost every day you stumble upon a new source in the information trade.

But we are also seeing a lot of familiar sources — re: MySpace — reinventing themselves and becoming viable again.

So the question now is where do you invest your time to get the most bang for your buck? Will Facebook, Twitter and YouTube continue to dominate the landscape or will the Internet fragment just like cable television has served noticed to the big three broadcast networks that the game has changed.

I guess all I can say is, stay tuned. (And please pin this to your Pinterst page)
